First day in Vietnam...

We hit Ho Chi Minh City (or Saigon for the locals) after a 7-hour bus ride from Phnom Penh, Cambodia yesterday, and already got to eat two of my favorite Vietnamese dishes today: Phở bò (rice noodle soup with raw beef) and Bánh xèo, or Saigon sizzling crepe (savoury pancake made of rice flour, tumeric and coconut milk, and filled with pork, shrimps and bean sprouts)... Both lived up to my expectations, can't wait to taste more along our route!

It would be very helpful if you give some specifics about the location of these cafes...Some of us will be going to Saigon in the future! Thanks..

Hi John, Actually there are lots of places selling Pho and Banh Xeo in Saigon, that's why I didn't mention any in particular.. but here you go! The photos of Pho Bo above were taken at a little cafe at the crossing between Phạm Ngu Lao and Ton That Tung, District 1, which I highly recommend. As to the Banh Xeo, we had it right next to our guesthouse in the same area, at a cafe called Asian Kitchen, 241/10 Pham Ngu Lao. However you may prefer to try this dish at other places more famous for it, such as Banh Xeo 46A, 46A Ð Dinh Cong Trang, which I did not have the chance to visit unfortunately but looks like the place to go to for Banh Xeo.. Enjoy your time in Saigon, and if you have any special recommendations for places to eat in Portland, please feel free to share as we'll be there in a couple of months.. Thanks! Cheers, Florence
